Deputies with the Lee County Sheriff's Office assisted in a manatee release this afternoon at Demere Key. This male manatee weighed just over 1000 pounds. He was captured in March of this year for medical treatement. The manatee was suffering from injuries sustained after being struck by a boat and cold sickness. After his initial rescue, the manatee was transported to the Tampa Zoo where they rehabilitated him. Today, the manatee was released back into his home right here in Lee County. | Lee C

On February 13, 2021 our Marine Unit responded to the waterways, and rescued a manatee that was trapped in the mangroves. The manatee ingested red tide algae and suffered health issues as a result. Zoo Tampa provided treatment and rehabilitation to the 1,100 pound manatee and nicknamed her “Darling.” Today, deputies joined forces with FWC Officers and Biologists well as volunteers to release “Darling” back into the wild.
