El murciélago espectral, (Vampyrum spectrum), la especie carnívora de mayor tamaño en América, alcanzando una envergadura de más de 90 cm. Según un artículo de la Universidad Autónoma de México (UNAM) posee orejas alargadas y un hocico prolongado provisto de unos colmillos de gran tamaño y dientes muy afilados, similares a los característicos del grupo de los carnívoros. Además posee unas patas enormes con garras semejantes a las de un gato de varios kilos y “no de un murciélago de 180 gramos”.
