Hades accordingly displayed his own cleverness by enchanting the boulder into rolling away from Sisyphus before he reached the top which ended up consigning Sisyphus to an eternity of useless efforts and unending frustration.

Transported to the Underworld, Sisyphus was condemned to roll a boulder up a hill, for all eternity. Homer, however, tells the story quite differently. Here, Sisyphus’ ‘crime’ was refusing to die when the gods decreed it.

In the final chapter, Camus compares the absurdity of man's life with the situation of Sisyphus, a figure of Greek mythology who was condemned to repeat forever the same meaningless task of pushing a boulder up a mountain, only to see it roll down again just as it nears the top.

Pushing a giant boulder up the hill for all eternity but never being able to reach the top as the boulder inevitably came down. And therefore, the myth of Sisyphus draws a picture of the eternal, and eternally fruitless, toil of a punished man.

For all eternity, Sisyphus is doomed to push a large boulder uphill. When the boulder reaches the top, the weight of the boulder is too great and it falls back down to the bottom. Sisyphus must them roll the boulder back to the top.

Once there, Hades forced him to roll a huge boulder up a hill only for it to roll down every time it neared the top, condemning Sisyphus to a life of eternal useless efforts and frustration. From this comes the modern term “ Sisyphean ”; a useless and mindless repetitive task.
