It is the second time in less than two weeks that the Russian president has called a halt to fighting without committing to a long-term end to the war.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday declared a unilateral ceasefire in Ukraine from May 8 to May 10, but Ukraine and the United States reacted cautiously. The Russian mini-truce would coincide with the 80th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Monday that the world did not want to wait until May 8 for Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin's announced ceasefire in the more than three-year-old war only to be in effect for a few days.
