In court filings submitted this month, leaders from io — the consumer hardware team OpenAI recently acquired from Jony Ive’s design studio for $6.5 billion — testified that the first device they plan to release won’t be an “in-ear device” or a “wearable.” They also say the AI device won’t ship until “at least” 2026.

OpenAI's debut consumer AI product, developed with former Apple designer Jony Ive through their startup io, won't be a wearable device, according to recent court filings. Dated June 21, the filings come amid a trademark spat sparked by a Google-backed startup called Iyo that builds AI-enabled earpieces.

OpenAI appears to have pulled a much-discussed video promoting the friendship between CEO Sam Altman and legendary Apple designer Jony Ive (plus, incidentally, OpenAI’s $6.5 billion deal to acquire Ive and Altman’s device startup io) from its website and YouTube page.
