Cinder cone volcanoes form when solid pieces of lava, called cinders, erupt from a vent and collect around it. The volcanoes in the Canary Islands are cinder cones.

High viscosity magma creates steep-sided lava domes wherein low-viscosity magma produces cinder cones. Government Mountain is located in Kaibab National Forest in south-central Coconino County.
