Dozens of others injured after thousands of devotees queue outside one of the most visited Hindu temples in south India.

A tragic stampede near the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple, commonly known as Tirupati, claimed the lives of at least six people and injured 35 others on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred as thousands of Hindu devotees gathered to secure free visit passes to the temple, one of India’s busiest and wealthiest religious sites.

One of India's wealthiest temples has apologised after six people were killed and dozens more injured in a crush as they queued for tickets to a festival which attracts hundreds of thousands each year. The incident took place on Wednesday night after thousands gathered in the temple town of Tirupati in southern Andhra Pradesh state.

At least six pilgrims, including five women, have been killed in a stampede in the southern Indian temple town of Tirupati. The devotees were waiting in queues to collect tokens from over 90 counters to offer prayers to Lord Venkateshwara Swamy on Wednesday when the incident took place,
