The weather forecast is perfect for a day at the beach this July 4th. But more than 20 lakes and ponds are closed for swimming across Massachusetts on Friday. The closures are mostly due to high levels of bacteria in the water.

Going into the Fourth of July weekend, over two dozen Massachusetts beaches are closed, most due to unsafe bacteria levels.

Over 20 beaches in Massachusetts are closed on July 4 across the state, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Interactive Beach Water Quality Dashboard. A total of 22 beaches are closed in towns such as Ashby, Beverly, Dartmouth and Salem.
