Four people who were trapped in an avalanche that struck a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) project at Mana in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli have succumbed to their injuries, the Indian Army said Friday as rescue operations continued for the second day. Meanwhile, 50 of the 55 trapped have been declared safe while five remain missing.

Four Army choppers have been pressed into rescue operations to save eight people still trapped under snow in the avalanche that struck near Mana Village in Chamoli district of the state, district magistrate Sandeep Tiwari said on Saturday.

Following the avalanche, a massive rescue operation has been launched. Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) have been deployed to the site.

Search teams in northern India on Saturday attempted to rescue 22 workers believed to be trapped after an avalanche hit a remote border area, officials and local media said. The workers were buried under snow and debris after the avalanche hit a construction camp near a village on the border with Tibet in Chamoli district on Friday.
