Communities across New York rely on funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency after intense floods and storms. Now, some are worried as President Trump says he wants to get rid of the agency.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded New York City money as part of a program Congress created to help states, municipalities and nonprofits provide basic services to immigrants. The program uses Customs and Border Protection funding and is managed by FEMA.
New York City sued the Trump administration Friday to recoup $80.5 million in migrant housing aid that the city says was abruptly rescinded and illegally pilfered from public coffers by Trump’s Federal Emergency Management Agency.
New York City does not house migrants in luxury hotel rooms. In 2024, it spent an average of $156 per night per hotel room.

A viral post claims that FEMA sent hurricane relief funds to New York City earlier this month to pay for housing illegal immigrants in hotels. “Elon just announced … The Biden Administration stole FEMA money that was meant for American hurricane victims and spent it on luxury hotels for illegals in New York!” the post reads.
New York City has filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration for the seizure of over $80 million in FEMA funds.
The program uses Customs and Border Protection funding and is managed by FEMA. It does not use money from FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund.
