New York’s governor plans to visit the Seneca Nation to formally apologize for the state’s role in running an upstate boarding school that separated Native American students from their families and forced them to assimilate into American society.

Gov. Kathy Hochul met with Seneca Nation representatives to deliver a formal apology for past mistreatment of Native children at a state-run school.

Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York visited Seneca land on Tuesday to apologize for the state’s operation of a boarding school that “sanctioned ethnic cleansing” of Native American children.
