Mississippi has executed the longest-serving man on its death row nearly 50 years after he was convicted of murder.

Richard Gerald Jordan, 79, was executed in Mississippi for the 1976 kidnapping and murder of Edwina Marter. Jordan, a Vietnam veteran, apologized to the victim's family before the lethal injection. His execution followed decades of legal challenges,
