A virus that's not well known to the public is spiking in China. CDC officials said HMPV is not a cause for concern here, nor is it a new virus.

Reports of a respiratory disease called human metapneumovirus (hMPV) spreading in China have stoked fears and misinformation on social media. Some posts claimed that this is a new virus and that China has declared a state of emergency due to a surge of hPMV, Influenza A, pneumonia, and COVID-19 cases.

China said on Sunday that it had seen a decline in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) among residents in northern provinces and in children under 14, amid international concern over a potential pandemic.
