Sweeping across the country from Texas to Maine, the winter storm will begin to dump heavy snow and ice on southern states on Saturday morning. However, the storm is not expected to reach New England until Sunday, bringing frigid temperatures and up to a foot of snow with it.
As New Hampshire prepares for a stretch of bitter cold, focus is also turning to the potential for a moderate to heavy snowfall from Sunday afternoon into Monday.
Holmes patrols around Mount Washington and has done lots of search and rescues in the northern Presidential Range. He doesn’t expect the cold weather to lead to more rescues this weekend, but says any rescues that do happen will likely be more severe than usual.
While the storm's worst impacts will be in southern states, the system will bring extreme cold and accumulating snow to New Hampshire.
According to CBS Boston, several districts reported delayed starts or full closures due to slick road conditions and forecasts calling for continued freezing rain and ice accumulation.
A little bit of snow is possible on New Year's Eve in New Hampshire, according to the National Weather Service (NWS), with a little more than an inch expected in Portsmouth. A clipper system is expected to bring between 1 to 3 inches of light snow tonight through New Year's Day morning.
