People flock to indoor rock climbing for the community and an experience they can't get at home. Independent gyms are struggling to recover and stay afloat against competition.

Throughout the changes, Moelter says one thing has remained constant on her calendar: A weekly rock-climbing "power hour" that she's had with her climbing partner, Angela, for over 20 years.

With offerings like bouldering competitions. rappelling classes and phone app-activated routes, these gyms around Los Angeles and Orange County, well, rock.

Today’s indoor climbing gyms are multifaceted organizations, often offering yoga classes, social and activity rooms, plastic rock walls, and yes, actual gyms.

The gym will feature more than 2,100 square feet of rock climbing walls up to 15 feet tall with various routes that offer different levels of difficulty.

The main difference between the two is that Central Rock Gym will focus more on bouldering, a form of rock climbing on 10- to 15-foot walls that doesn’t require a harness or rope.

"The rock-climbing wall is from Walltopia, which is kind of the high-end rock-climbing wall that you can get," Kirk explained. "In the rock-climbing world, they really love this brand.

“Different rock-climbing publications have said that as far as they know, it’s the tallest privately owned rock-climbing wall in the world,” Wildowsky said.
