The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories for the southeastern United States. It's always hot in the summer in the U.S. Southeast, but even by the standards of Florida and the Carolinas, the steamy heat wave on tap for the region Saturday into the coming week is a little extreme.

Around 100 million people are under heat alerts Friday, from coastal Maine to South Carolina and across much of the Midwest and lower Ohio Valley into the Mid-South. Additional alerts are likely in the Southeast as temperatures rise in coming days.

A heat advisory goes into effect Thursday for parts of Connecticut where heat index values will soar past 100 degrees on Friday.

NWS expects the heat value to go up to 110 degrees. The organization warns that hot temperatures, coupled with humidity, may cause heat illness. Precautionary measures provided by NWS include drinking plenty of water, staying out of the sun and staying in air-conditioned rooms.

The heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service is in effect until 9 p.m. for most of North Texas. Just like Thursday, the culprit isn't the actual temperature but the heat index. Some areas will again reach or surpass a "feels-like" temperature of 105 degrees.
