Dead pixels look like black dots and don't light up, but sometimes they disappear on their own. Free apps like JScreenFix can try to fix stuck pixels, but they're unlikely to fix dead pixels.
Most LCD monitors can't be returned for dead or stuck pixels until you have a certain number. If you only have 3 or 4, for example, you will probably be told just to live with it, which really sucks ...
