Rick Derringer, the pioneering guitarist, frontman of the influential, proto-garage rock act the McCoys, and a Grammy-winning producer for Weird Al, has died at 77.

Rick Derringer, a guitarist and record producer who is responsible for the hit “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo,” has died. He was reportedly 77.

Rick Derringer, who had a No. 1 hit with The McCoys in "Hang on Sloopy" and created a rock staple in "Rock and Roll, Hootchie Koo" died May 26. He was 77.
