Tsunami advisory has been cancelled for Bay Area, Central Coast, but officials urge caution as dangerous coastal conditions expected through the day.

SAN FRANCISCO – The Bay Area and other coastal areas of California are under a tsunami watch following a magnitude 8.7 earthquake in Russia’s Far East, the National Weather Service said. The watch also extends to coastal area of Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska.

Los Angeles County was placed under an updated tsunami advisory by the National Weather Service on Wednesday at 4:19 a.m. The advisory is in effect until 5:49 a.m.

A tsunami watch was issued for the entire West Coast on Tuesday after an 8.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia, according to officials.

Tide gauges recorded tsunami waves along the Northern California coast, including in San Francisco and Monterey, according to the weather service.
