After Gov. Greg Abbott ordered the deployment of more than 5,000 Texas National Guard troops across the state ahead of mass, anti-Trump protests, internal memos obtained by the American-Statesman reveal military leaders are scrambling to find and train enough personnel for the mission.
Houston prepares for a weekend of protests as Governor Abbott deploys National Guard statewide. HOUSTON — As unrest continues in other parts of the country, local and state leaders in Texas are preparing for what is expected to be a busy weekend of protests.
A series of demonstrations, in opposition to President Donald Trump and his policies, are planned for Saturday in Houston and several surrounding cities.
Organizers with Houston's chapter of the 50501 Movement, a national political organization opposed to Trump, said they are calling for a peaceful protest, which is set to begin at 10 a.m. at City Hall. The demonstration is expected to attract several thousand people, said Kristi Pham, of 50501 Houston.
