The Wolf Moon — the first full moon of the year and of winter in the Northern Hemisphere — will be best seen on Jan. 14, shortly after it has occulted Mars.

The first full moon of the year comes into view next week. The wolf moon, named for the howling of hungry wolves during cold winter nights, will be at peak just after sunset Monday, Jan. 13. Full moon names are often tied to nature or farming and have roots in Native American, Colonial or European traditions.

Texans will get a chance to see the first full moon of 2025, known as a "Wolf Moon," next week. This lunar event will make its debut as the moon sits on the opposite side of the Earth from the sun and passes in front of Mars.

However, January's full moon has other traditional names as well, including the "Cold Moon," "Frost Exploding Moon," "Freeze up Moon," "Severe Moon," and "Hard Moon," which all reflect the weather of the season.

Wolf Moon will occult Mars on January 13, offering a celestial spectacle filled with folklore and astronomical intrigue.

There's a full moon shining in every calendar month of 2025 on these dates: Jan. 13, Feb. 12, March 14, April 13, May 12, June 11, July 10, Aug. 9, Sept. 7, Oct. 7, Nov. 5 and Dec. 4.
