Highway 61 North is a public highway and there is no charge for driving on a public highway. However, why would you not stop in to visit the lighthouse and the state park? If you go to tour the lighthouse there is a fee to enter the lighthouse grounds and the lighthouse itself, but not a "park fee". If you drive into the park area (not the lighthouse grounds) you will have to pay a day visit fee. There are many beautiful hiking trails and scenic views. Camping there is a separate fee. Highway 61 along the North Shore of Lake Superior passes through several state parks and there is no fee for driving anywhere along Highway 61 all the way to Canada. This is one of the most scenic drives in the USA. Enjoy!

I agree with ladyme1. There are 20 Cart in sites and their website reads...These beautiful sites are all within 2,000 feet of the parking lot. Wheeled carts are available to haul gear and supplies to your campsite. These are secluded sites. There are 4 back pack in sites and 2 wheelchair accessible also. There is a site that shows North Shore camp grounds...go to northshorevisitor then lodging then campgrounds.

to me the best place to view it is from the beach area by the picnic grounds in the park south of the lighthouse and along the walking trail. that is where the majority of the pictures are taken. you still need to have the state park sticker on your vehicle. that is $7 for the vehicle for a day. so if you have 4 people in your vehicle, that is $1.75 per person. then you could skip the tour. or buy the sticker that is good for a year at all the state parks for $35. but there is a scenic overlook on 61 south of the park that you can see it from.

Q:
I know they charge admission to tour the lighthouse, but can you go here and hike trails and see the outside of the lighthouse without the fee? Is it worth going if you don't want to pay for a whole family to get in the lighthouse?
A:
You would need a State Park permit to go hiking in the park. Daily permits are $5 per vehicle.
