What an amazing, magical gem this place is. The trails are gorgeous, as are the views. And do yourself a favor and allow yourself to feel the spirit and magic, and sacredness of this place. Going dur…Full review by wisc-rcg

Hiked up to the Fire Point to see the Great and Little Bear mounds as well as wonderful views of the Mississippi. It's a somewhat difficult trip in the beginning but well worth it. Very quiet and p…Full review by 196LindaC

Nice visitor center but the mounds themselves are often hard to distinguish. Basically, they are the areas of unmowed grass. If the park service truly had an interest in your seeing them, they’d buil…Full review by maryfG7955GV

Is there enough cool stuff here to warrant a visit even if your party includes older/disabled people who would not be able to do hiking on an incline?
A:
Probably not. The ranger station has some interesting items and displays but not enough to hold someone's attention for a couple of hours.

Tried answering this, but answer appeared to disappear. Ignore this if I'm duplicating. I would do Effigy Mounds now and later, if you're able. There's much to see and admire in any season. In the winter, the bare trees afford better views and the dormant grasses make the mounds easier to see, too. The trail starts out with switchbacks which could be slippery or muddy, depending on conditions. Plan accordingly. Ask about the Day McGill unit south of Pikes Peak. It's flatland along the Mississippi, so an easy hike with many more mounds. That area floods easily though, so might be closed. Marching Bear trail is also worth the hike. Marquette & McGregor are great time to visit regardless of the weather. So is Pikes Peak State Park.
Q:
can you walk the trails alone or do you have to have a guided tour?
A:
You are welcome to walk the trails without a guide. Wear comfortable shoes. The first part is a good incline.
